Course Description

This is a 24-hour, live, in-person continuing education course for licensed massage therapists and wellness professionals. This course teaches practitioners how to incorporate conscious breathwork as a body-centered, somatic modality into their professional client sessions.

Participants learn the physiological foundations of breath, including respiratory anatomy, biochemistry, oxygen and CO2 exchange, the Bohr Effect, and autonomic nervous system regulation, and how these mechanisms can be used therapeutically within a massage therapy or bodywork context. The course also covers the psychophysiology of somatic responses, body-centered awareness principles, practitioner facilitation skills, ethical hands-on touch with client consent, and professional practice development.

The Liquid Breathwork approach is a gentle, surrender-based methodology rooted in circular breathing patterns, intentional breath holds, the physiological sigh (double exhale), and diaphragmatic awareness. It is designed to complement hands-on bodywork by supporting nervous system regulation, somatic release, and client relaxation in a professional therapeutic setting.

This course does not include the performance of hypnosis, psychological counseling, or any modality outside the massage therapist's scope of practice. All somatic and psychophysiological content is presented as practitioner education to enhance understanding of client responses during breathwork, not as clinical diagnosis or psychological treatment.

Instructors

Shelby Von Oepen, RN

Clinical Science Director

Registered Nurse (BSN) with 14 years of clinical experience. Shelby brings deep expertise in respiratory anatomy and physiology, autonomic nervous system science, Polyvagal Theory, contraindications, and client safety protocols. Her nursing background provides the clinical foundation that makes this course credible for licensed healthcare and wellness professionals.

Teaching responsibilities: Respiratory Anatomy & Physiology, Breath Biochemistry, Autonomic Nervous System Science, Polyvagal Theory, Tetany & Respiratory Alkalosis, Contraindications, Client Safety Protocols.

NCBTMB Qualification: Holds a Bachelor's degree with major directly related to course content AND 14 years of professional healthcare experience.

Ryan McBurney

Breathwork & Facilitation Director

Creator of Liquid Breathwork. Ryan holds a Bachelor's degree and has completed seven professional Breathwork training programs, including Dan Brule's Breath Mastery (Rebirthing and Transformational Breathwork), Kasper van der Meulen's Breathwork Masterclass, and Somatic Breathwork training (a conscious connected breathing style), totaling 324+ hours of non-entry level breathwork education. He has guided Breathwork professionally since 2018 and has directed this training program for 4 years.

Teaching responsibilities: Breathwork Methodology, Breathing Techniques, Full Circle Breath, Presence-Based Verbal Cueing, Ethical Physical Touch, Session Structure, Somatic Integration, Practitioner Self-Care, Professional Practice Development.

NCBTMB Qualification: 324+ hours of non-entry level education in the subject matter (minimum required: 100 hours) AND professional experience since 2018 AND 4 years of teaching experience, independently satisfying three separate NCBTMB instructor qualification criteria.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define somatic awareness and explain its relevance to a massage therapist's embodied professional presence and therapeutic relationship with clients
  2. Explain the psychophysiological basis of held tension and suppressed somatic patterns in the body and how breathwork supports the body's natural physiological release process
  3. Describe body-centered psychology principles as they relate to client physiological responses during breathwork-integrated sessions
  4. Identify the three common physiological stress response patterns — suppression, avoidance, and reactive expression — and their observable relevance in a therapeutic client session
  5. Apply practitioner self-awareness practices to recognize and manage personal somatic responses that may arise while guiding clients through breathwork
  6. Explain the psychophysiology of the physiological letting go response and its measurable effects on muscle tension, breathing patterns, pulse rate, and skin response
  7. Describe the anatomical structures involved in respiration including the diaphragm, alveoli, turbinates, and pulmonary capillary system
  8. Explain the clinical differences between nasal and mouth breathing including turbinate filtration, nitric oxide production, and vasodilation effects and the therapeutic rationale for each within a client session
  9. Trace the complete biochemical pathway of the breath including inhalation mechanics, alveolar diffusion, hemoglobin oxygen transport, the Bohr Effect, cellular metabolism and ATP production, and CO2 exhalation
  10. Explain the clinical principles Breathe light to breathe right and Low and Slow as safety guidelines for breathwork with clients
  11. Differentiate between hyperventilation and hypoventilation, their opposing effects on CO2 levels, blood pH, and autonomic nervous system state, and identify when each may be used therapeutically within scope of practice
  12. Describe the physiological mechanism of respiratory alkalosis and the associated temporary sensation of tetany and explain why this is a safe and expected transient response during intentional breathwork with a client
  13. Identify the three primary autonomic nervous system states relevant to therapeutic breathwork: Parasympathetic/Ventral Vagal, Sympathetic, and Dorsal Vagal
  14. Explain Polyvagal Theory and Neuroception and apply these concepts to understanding how a therapist creates a safe therapeutic environment for clients
  15. Describe the vagus nerve's anatomical pathway and functional role in breathwork including how slow diaphragmatic breathing, extended exhales, and humming directly stimulate parasympathetic regulation
  16. Explain the concept of physiological co-regulation and how a therapist's own regulated nervous system directly influences a client's physiological state during a session
  17. Explain the concept of Transient Hypofrontality and its role in supporting embodied presence and somatic release in clients
  18. Demonstrate proficiency in the following breathing techniques for safe therapeutic client use: Circular Connected Breathing, Physiological Sigh, In Breath Holds, Out Breath Holds, 2-Part Diaphragmatic Breath, Box Breathing, Triangle Breathing, Heart Coherent Breathing, Humming for vagus nerve stimulation, and Double Inhale
  19. Apply the 4 Quadrants of the Full Circle Breath and the Transformational Breath Formula within a structured client session
  20. Distinguish between objective and subjective safety and apply both to structuring a therapeutically effective breathwork session with a client
  21. Structure a complete one-on-one breathwork session using the 6-phase clinical arc: Introduction, Opening Breath Awareness, Activation, Processing, Integration, and Closing
  22. Demonstrate presence-based verbal cueing skills appropriate for a professional therapeutic setting including varied pacing, tonal shifts, grounding language, and intentional use of silence
  23. Apply ethical hands-on touch techniques with full informed client consent within standard massage therapy scope of practice. Techniques include: Grounding Hand — a gentle steady hand placed on the client's shoulder or head to provide physical presence and grounding; Gentle Rocking — hands placed on opposite hip and shoulder applying gentle alternating pressure to create a subtle rocking motion that supports somatic release; and Hand on Belly — gentle placement of hand on the client's abdomen to draw awareness to diaphragmatic breathing. All touch is fully clothed, non-invasive, and within standard massage therapy scope of practice. Consent is obtained verbally before every session begins.
  24. Screen clients using the Liquid Breathwork contraindications checklist, obtain signed informed consent, and explain how breathwork integrates as a complementary hands-on modality within a massage therapy session
