Does this count toward a California renewal?

There is no state requirement for it to count toward. The State of California does not license the massage profession (CAMTC FAQ).

The California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) is a private nonprofit that offers voluntary certification, and some cities and counties require it. CAMTC does not require continuing education to recertify.

So this course is offered for therapists who want the training, or who hold a credential elsewhere that requires CE hours.

South Lake Tahoe Course Date

Lake Tahoe Weekend

August 2027

Exact dates still to be set. Flexible refund policy. Transfer or refund within 30 days of dates and location being settled.

It runs on the same weekend as the Breathwork certification in Lake Tahoe training, with the same two instructors. The weekend is in South Lake Tahoe, on the California side of the lake. Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area drive up US-50, and Truckee comes around the lake. Reno and Carson City are close as well. If your license is from Nevada or any other state, check that state's rules. We have not reviewed them.

What You Learn in 24 Hours

  • Breath science from a Registered Nurse. Respiratory anatomy, CO2 and the vagus nerve.
  • Ten breathing techniques for client use. The physiological sigh, breath holds and box breathing among them.
  • Ethical hands-on touch. Fully clothed, with consent, within your scope of practice.
  • A 6-phase session structure. Client screening, informed consent and supervised practice.

You receive a Certificate of Completion documenting 24 CE hours. Full attendance is required, with no partial credit. See the full schedule and course policies.

Who Teaches the Course

Ryan McBurney teaches the techniques and session structure, and Shelby Von Oepen, RN, teaches breath science and client safety. They co-founded Liquid Breathwork, a Breathwork practice based in Phoenix, Arizona.

California Massage CE Questions

How many CE hours do massage therapists need in California?

None at the state level. The State of California does not license the massage profession, and the California Massage Therapy Council does not require continuing education to recertify.

Does California accept NCBTMB approved continuing education?

There is no California state CE requirement for it to apply to. NCBTMB Approved Provider hours matter if you are NCBTMB Board Certified or hold a license in a state that accepts them.

Is CAMTC certification required to practice massage in California?

Not by the state. CAMTC says its certification is voluntary and that neither the State of California nor CAMTC requires it to provide massage for compensation. It also notes that some cities and counties do require it.

Why take a 24 CE hour course in California, then?

For the training itself, or because you hold a credential elsewhere that requires CE hours. NCBTMB Board Certified therapists need 24 CEs from an Approved Provider every two years.

Where can I find massage continuing education classes in California?

Liquid Breathwork is bringing a live, in-person 24 CE hour course to South Lake Tahoe, on the California side of the lake, in August 2027. Exact dates are still to be set, so join the wait list and we will send them first.
